Headford & District No Name! Club History

Headford & District officially opened its doors to the many young people in their community on 14th of February (St Valentines Day) 2003. Previous to their official launch, the newest No Name Club to the West organised a pre-opening disco get the young people to warm their feet to the idea of this new way of life. This pre-bash before the big bash was held on 5th of January 2003. This event was such a success that it firmly rooted the Club to new developments and beginnings as well as opened the eyes of the young people they hoped to attract.

For a club who was in their prime the Headford & District No Name had not seized in their growth and progressed rapidly thanks to the original petit adult committee Peader Brick, Bernie Divilly and Noreen Walsh.

At the outset, Headford & District No Name had over sixty young people between the ages of 15 and 18 at their enrolment night. These sixty young people also participated the following year which encouraged the Adult committee that the Club was definitely in demand. Not surprisingly, the Club which celebrated its sixth birthday recently has many of their original young members serving on their adult committee.

Caherlistrane Community Centre is the focal point for Headford & District No Name and attracts fellow No Name Clubs around the West. It is an ideal location which provides plenty of opportunities for the youths of today to mix and mingle in an alcohol and substance-free environment.

The Club have participated in numerous events throughout their seven year service to the communities they represent. On a local and national scale, the Headford & District No Name Club has fundraised for organisations and causes such as the Share A Dream Foundation, St. Patricks Day Parades, MS, Action Autism Ireland. The Club has purchased two defibrillators for Presentation College Headford Secondary School and Caherlistrane Gaelic Grounds. These events are to name only few.

Since its development in 2003 Headford/Caherlistrane No Name have achieved a numerous awards both for individual Host/Hostesses and as a group. In April 2004 the club achieved one of its greatest successes – the National Hostess of the Year Award was won by hostess Maria Walsh. In 2007 Maria’s brother Michael Walsh reached the National Final with many other Host and Hostess including Fiona Lawless, Sean Connelly, Suzanne Creavan, Adrian Murphy, Ciara Gleeson, Grace Fox and Owen Pierce reaching regional finals. The Club, as a group, have won numerous awards for their participation in the once known National Variety Awards, now National Super Talent Awards. Reaching the final year after year has become something passive to the groups that have come through the Headford & District No Name Club.

It is not only the young host and hostesses that have achieved titles within the club. Bernie Divilly has been a Development Officer for the Association covering the areas of Galway North and South, Mayo South and Clare. Bernie also provides the glitz and glam to the National Events since 2006. Maria Walsh was also Joint Public Relations Officer and was the first young person to serve as a member of the Board of Directors.

It is not surprising that with such a strong Adult Committee the young people achieve and reach the standards they do.

The Headford & District No Name has opened its doors to a large number of young people representing Shrule, Headford, Caherlistrane, Annaghdown, Corrundula, Cong and Clonboo. It is believed close to 400 young people have acted as a Host or Hostess throughout the clubs seven years and many more are expected to join in the coming years. If you ever find yourself in the Headford & District area please feel free to pop in and see us; Our doors are always open to people who want to better the lives and opportunities of young people in Ireland.
