Westport’s Charity Walk
Westport No Name Club are embarking on a mission to raise money for the Irish Kidney Association and in doing so, the club will be raising awareness of the benefits of walking.
The Irish Kidney Association is a charitable voluntary organisation that was founded in 1978 and is dedicated to meeting the needs of renal patients living with and affected by end stage renal disease. The association also works with patients’ families and carers.
Westport No Name Club has been in existence for seven years has just commenced its Lenten campaign to promote walking among young & old and to highlight its benefits. With the recent addition of the Great Western Greenway to the Westport region, the club’s goal is to walk 10km of the Newport to Mulranny section of the Greenway on Easter Saturday, April 23rd.
In preparation for this, it is inviting any interested people or groups of people of all ages to join in the fun and healthy activity of walking on Tuesday nights for the duration of Lent. It will be walking from the Mill Street Car Park and will travel onto the Quay school. This will commence at 7.30pm and last approximately half an hour.
On Easter Saturday April 23rd, the group will walk from Newport to Tiernaur, where a bus will return people back to Newport after some light refreshments in Nevins Newfield Inn. The walk will commence at 11.30am sharp and people will be back in Newport for around 2.30pm. Depending on demand, transport may be provided from and back to Westport.
We are asking all participants on Easter Saturday for a minimum donation of €5, all of which will be going directly to the Irish Kidney Association. We are hopeful that local man Darren Cawley, who recently had a Kidney Transplant, will be able to join us on the day for the walk.
If anyone is interested in joining us on Easter Saturday or if you require any further information please contact Eamon at 087 7783631 or Connie at 086 8135969. We ask that all interested people will contact us before April 18th, so we have approximate numbers for both Nevins and for the Bus.
